-Qingshan Lantern Festival Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival- in Yishan, Fujian, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

On September 18, 2023, in Kuala Lumpur, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tan Beng Chong, the president of the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association, about the exciting “2024 Mid-Autumn Festival – Qing Shan Lantern Festival” happening at the Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Cemetery. This year’s celebration features a variety of activities, including a lantern walk, lantern-making workshops, and riddles, all showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the community.

Tan shared that the association has been hosting Mid-Autumn celebrations in the cemetery for several years now, aiming to highlight its unique cultural and ecological value while paying tribute to the rich heritage left by their ancestors.

The cemetery itself, a historic resting place for Chinese immigrants, has been around for nearly 150 years and is home to over 20,000 souls from Fujian province. This year’s festivities kicked off on September 15 and will continue until September 22. On the opening night, notable guests, including Member of Parliament Chan Keng Koi and Honorary President Lim Chong Kiang, joined hundreds of locals in a lantern-lit procession through the cemetery, taking in the large decorative lanterns that transformed the grounds into a breathtaking spectacle.

Attendees were treated to stunning views of iconic Kuala Lumpur landmarks, such as the Petronas Twin Towers and the Kuala Lumpur Tower, which provided a striking backdrop for the enchanting lantern displays and created a popular setting for visitors looking to capture special moments.

Beyond the lantern displays, the organizers arranged lantern-making workshops, where local artists guided participants in creating their own unique lanterns. The event also featured activities like lantern viewing, riddle guessing, and traditional games for children, enriching the overall experience for families.

Tan emphasized the cemetery’s significance as a space intertwined with history, culture, and nature. He hopes that these events will enhance the local community’s connection to the site. His vision is for the cemetery to evolve into not just a place of remembrance, but a vibrant park that marries history, culture, and ecological beauty, accessible to everyone.
