Chinese and Malaysian cultural institutions join hands to promote exchanges and cooperation

Beijing, September 13, 2023 — As we approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia in 2024, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed on September 11 in Kuala Lumpur. This agreement, made between the Beijing Huasheng International Media Center and the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Center, aims to bolster cultural exchange and collaboration between the two nations.

During a recent interview, representatives from both parties outlined their ambitious plans for extensive cooperation across multiple domains. They intend to co-host a variety of cultural events—including art exhibitions, performing arts presentations, and academic seminars—to help educate Malaysian citizens about Chinese culture. Moreover, in terms of media collaboration, they will enhance information exchange through various media platforms, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of both countries and aiming to elevate the profile of Chinese culture in Malaysia and throughout Southeast Asia.

The representatives also mentioned intentions to collaborate on economic trade, talent development, and the expansion of the cultural industry. Their joint efforts will focus on nurturing culturally aware professionals, ultimately driving growth in both nations’ economies and cultural sectors.

Zhang Huaxie, the director of the Beijing Huasheng International Media Center, remarked on the significance of this collaboration with the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Center. “This represents a major opportunity to promote Chinese culture globally,” he stated, emphasizing their commitment to work closely with their Malaysian counterparts to foster greater cultural exchange and development between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Wu Hengcan, the president of the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Center, highlighted the longstanding history of cultural exchanges between Malaysia and China. He expressed optimism that this partnership would open new avenues for advancing Chinese culture in Malaysia and promote collaborative efforts to introduce more Malaysians to the richness of Chinese cultural heritage. “We hope to rejuvenate the friendship and cultural ties between our two nations,” he said.

Notably, Wu Hengcan brings over 30 years of experience in enhancing cultural connections between the two nations. He has been instrumental in translating China’s four great classical novels into Malay, founding the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Center, and implementing proficiency tests for Mandarin. His initiatives have also included staging translations of classic literature through Malay drama, facilitating the integration of Chinese literature into mainstream Malaysian society.

Since its inception, the Beijing Huasheng International Media Center has organized several significant events, including the “Belt and Road” International Brand Spring Festival Gala and the “Green Olympics: Together Towards the Future” International Cultural and Art Exchange Exhibition at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Their multimedia projects, such as “Voices of China and Foreign Countries,” “Voices of Civilization,” “Voices of Role Models,” and “Voices of the People,” have received notable attention and acclaim both domestically and internationally.

The signing ceremony also attracted distinguished guests, including Zhang Ziyan, executive chairman of the China-Africa Cultural Promotion Association, and Li Yujuan, vice president of the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Center.
