Jilin City opens two ruins in East and West Tuanshan to reveal mysterious history

On October 4th, news broke that the Dongtuanshan and Xituanshan Site Parks in Jilin City, Jilin Province, have officially opened their gates to the public, inviting visitors to delve into the intriguing history of the ancient Fuyu Kingdom through various exhibits and artifacts.

The newly established Dongtuanshan Site Exhibition Hall is currently featuring an exhibition titled “The Fuyu King City at Dushan—Dongtuanshan Site.” This exhibit emphasizes the importance of the Dongtuanshan site, providing insights into its distribution, size, architectural elements, and burial locations. Among the artifacts on display, visitors can find pottery and stone tools that offer a glimpse into the past.

Experts have noted that the relics discovered at this site have been instrumental in establishing a timeline for the archaeological culture of Jilin City and the surrounding province. Historians tell us that over 2,200 years ago, during the Western Han Dynasty, the Fuyu people established the Fuyu Kingdom in the Jilin region, with its capital situated in the Dongtuanshan flatlands. According to records from the “Jilin Provincial Chronicle,” Fuyu was the first slave society in Northeast China, enjoying political and economic autonomy while paying tribute to both the Han and later Jin dynasties. At its height, the Fuyu Kingdom spanned more than a thousand miles and was home to over 200,000 people, thriving for approximately 700 years.

The Xituanshan site is of particular interest as it dates back to the Bronze Age, showcasing a meticulously curated collection of Xituanshan cultural artifacts that have drawn numerous photo-hungry visitors. One standout piece is the famous “pig head stone carving,” which has gained recognition in archaeological communities. The artist responsible for this carving exaggerated the features of the pig, giving it an elongated snout and upright ears, reflecting the advanced aesthetics and stone-carving techniques of the period.

Officials from Jilin City have announced that various historical and cultural sites are now being opened during the National Day Golden Week, demonstrating the region’s rich cultural heritage.
