Focus on the situation in the Middle East- Another peacekeeper was shot and Lebanese Hezbollah fired rockets towards Israel

On October 12, the ongoing conflict between Lebanon and Israel intensified, prompting significant developments. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that Israel launched attacks across northern, southern, and western regions of Lebanon, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and 37 injuries. Additionally, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed that one of its peacekeepers was injured by gunfire during military activities on the night of October 11, marking the fifth UNIFIL member injured in recent days.

In its statement, Hezbollah accused the Israeli military of utilizing civilian homes as bases to orchestrate their aggressive operations against Lebanon. They emphasized the targeted nature of these Israeli facilities, asserting that civilian safety is at risk.

According to a report from Agence France-Presse, UNIFIL announced that a peacekeeper stationed at their headquarters in Nakoura was hit during military operations nearby. This peacekeeper has since been treated and is currently in stable condition. The recent escalation in conflict has resulted in injuries to five UNIFIL personnel, including two Sri Lankan peacekeepers, who were confirmed injured due to an Israeli attack.

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported additional incidents on the same day. Israeli forces struck the town of Dair Beal in northern Lebanon, killing two and injuring four. In the southern town of Bajaa, four individuals were killed and 18 injured. Furthermore, an assault in the western region of Masara resulted in nine deaths and 15 injuries.

On a different front, the U.S. Central Command announced on the same day that airstrikes targeted known ISIS camps in Syria on the early morning of October 11. The command indicated that they are currently assessing the impact of these strikes and noted no indications of civilian casualties thus far.

Hezbollah also issued a statement asserting that the Israeli military was using civilian properties in northern Israel to establish command centers, particularly in populated areas of major cities like Haifa and Tiberias. They warned Israeli citizens to steer clear of these areas for their safety and claimed responsibility for rocket attacks launched from various locations in northern Israel.

According to the Israel Times, on the evening of October 12, air raid sirens were activated in the Upper Galilee region, with the Israeli Defense Forces reporting that about 40 rockets were launched from Lebanon in two waves. Some of these rockets were intercepted by Israeli defense systems, while the remainder fell in uninhabited areas. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties.

In related news, the Israel Times reported on October 13 that the Biden administration is considering deploying the THAAD missile defense system to Israel but has yet to make a final decision. Multiple Israeli media outlets had previously reported that the U.S. plans to station THAAD in Israel and send American troops to operate it as part of a broader strategic response to recent missile threats from Iran.
