On October 23, Italian photographer Fabio Nodari kicked off his participation in the series of activities titled “Chasing Light and Cultural Exchange” in Hainan by visiting the Yinggehai salt field in Ledong. He described the breathtaking view as, “an endless silver sea that looks like a dream!”
The Yinggehai salt field is uniquely situated between mountains, shielded from northern rains by the peaks of the Jianfengling range, allowing for abundant sunlight throughout the year, which is ideal for salt production. The high salinity of the surrounding seawater further enhances the field’s optimal conditions for harvesting salt.
Captivated by the stunning scenery of the salt field, Nodari paused to take it all in. “Visiting the salt field reminds me of an interesting fact: the word ‘salary’ in English comes from the Latin word for ‘salt.’ In ancient Europe, salt was a precious resource, and many people’s wages were actually paid in salt,” he shared.
Nodari then explored the Yinggehai Salt Culture Museum, established in 1964 and covering an area of 670 square meters. “Here, we not only learn about the entire salt-making process and the three phases of the Yinggehai salt field’s development, but we also get a glimpse into the youthful struggles of a generation. This place is a microcosm of the historical period during the construction of New China,” he noted. With the help of a knowledgeable guide, he gained insights into various salt production methods and the rich historical and cultural background behind the salt field, even sampling the special Li ethnic mountain orchid liquor.
Continuing along the scenic coastal road, just five kilometers from the salt field lies another popular hot spot: the Yingge Surf Station. With sails unfurling and picturesque boat houses dotting the landscape, Nodari captured breathtaking aerial footage of the station using his drone, portraying the visitor center and boat-shaped guesthouses as if they were painted onto a canvas.
“In Mandarin, the word for relaxation (‘闲’) sounds the same as the word for salt (‘咸’). So if you’re looking to unwind, why not come to this beautiful place, sprinkle some salt into your life, and take a break here in Yinggehai?” Nodari invited, facing the camera with enthusiasm.
