In a recent biodiversity assessment in Shexian County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, a research team made an exciting discovery: they tracked a population of the nationally protected Tibetan macaque, a species classified as level II endangered.
The Tibetan macaque, the largest among China’s macaque species, is unique to the region. Its habitat primarily spans the high-altitude, wooded valleys of central and southern China, where there are sparse trees and rocky terrain. While this primate has a broad distribution, its population remains limited. The favorable ecological conditions and dense forests of Shexian County have created an ideal environment for the Tibetan macaque to thrive.
