The WTA500 Tokyo finals begins! Zheng Qinwen launches an attack on the third championship of the season

On October 27 at 11 AM Beijing time, the WTA 500 finals in Tokyo will kick off, featuring rising star Zheng Qinwen making a bid for her third title of the season. Meanwhile, former champion Sofia Kenin, who hasn’t lifted a trophy in four years, will be determined to make a strong comeback. The burning question remains: who will ultimately take home the trophy?

This final marks the first-ever clash between Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen and Australian Open champion Kenin. In the semifinals on October 26, Zheng, the top seed, showcased her prowess by defeating sixth seed Anna Schneider in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, securing her place in the final. This is her second consecutive final appearance at this event and represents her fifth final of the year, as well as the ninth in her professional career.

On the other side, Kenin, who earned her spot in the finals as a wildcard, triumphed over ninth seed Beltrame with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win. This marks her return to a tour final after her performance at the San Diego event last year, also standing as her ninth career final. Kenin previously captured the Australian Open title at the beginning of 2020.

Today, Zheng Qinwen will aim for both her third title of the season and her fifth overall, as she heads into the final with a perfect record of three wins in this tournament. This season alone, she has reached five finals, bringing home two titles and two runner-up finishes. Her accomplishments include an Olympic gold medal, a WTA 250 title in Palermo, a Grand Slam runner-up finish at the Australian Open, and a runner-up finish at the WTA 1000 in Wuhan.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Zheng’s performance in the final—go for it, Queen Wen!
