Last Saturday, the South West Assembly of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took place in Lagos, marking a significant moment for the ruling party and its leadership in the region. Shola Oyeyipo delves into the importance of this gathering.

The South West geo-political zone carries substantial weight, and its leaders understand the gravity of their responsibilities. Known for its diverse political heritage, this region has consistently played a vital role in Nigeria’s political framework. This is particularly crucial at this juncture, as President Bola Tinubu comes from this area. Navigating the balance between supporting one of their own and the broader political implications has created a complex dynamic.

In this light, the recent assembly indicated a shift in regional party politics. The venue was filled with vibrant colors, symbolizing unity and collaboration among its members. The APC regional assembly chair and Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was clearly mindful of the high expectations on him and rose to the occasion.

Holding the dual responsibilities of regional coordinator and governor of President Tinubu’s home state presents both opportunities and challenges. Nevertheless, Sanwo-Olu and his team adeptly organized an event that brought together the political leadership of the region for a significant reunion.

Hosted at the expansive Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, the assembly attracted over 800 participants, including local government officials, state assembly members, governors, and notable former leaders. The atmosphere was electric, filled with nostalgia as attendees, many reconnecting after years apart, engaged in lively discussions amidst a kaleidoscope of colors. The event turned out to be far more meaningful than initially anticipated.

“As a vital part of Nigeria, the Southwest is endowed with tremendous potential to lead the country toward prosperity,” Sanwo-Olu remarked while welcoming the attendees. “This gathering provides us the chance to unite as one family and explore ways to collaborate for the benefit of our people, our region, and our nation.”

He underscored that the assembly served as both a moment of reflection and an opportunity to revive hope, aiming for a Nigeria where poverty is a thing of the past. “We are uniquely positioned to alter Nigeria’s trajectory. The Southwest has always been seen as a pioneer in innovation and progress.”

Sanwo-Olu reminisced about the accomplishments of previous leaders who were revered for their visionary leadership. He pointed to historical milestones, such as the establishment of Africa’s first television station and Nigeria’s first stadium, achievements made possible through disciplined management and strategic investment in education and agriculture.

The discussion then took a more introspective turn as he raised pressing questions about current regional challenges, including societal issues contributing to youth disillusionment, the depersonalization of agriculture, and a decline in values. “Today, we have the opportunity to address these shortcomings,” he urged.

His impassioned speech set the stage for deeper discussions about the future. Former Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi delivered a stirring keynote address commending the assembly’s convening.

A founding member of the APC, Fayemi expressed pride in the Southwest’s commitment to the party’s vision for change. He recounted accomplishments since the APC’s formation in 2015 while candidly acknowledging ongoing challenges, particularly concerning security, economic pressures, and unemployment.

“As the ruling party, we need to face these issues directly,” he stated, highlighting the necessity for a comprehensive strategy to tackle the current trials.

Fayemi emphasized the importance of humility, public service, and bravery as the APC endeavors to restore Nigerians’ hope. “We cannot become complacent; we must learn from our past and dedicate ourselves to leading the fight against underdevelopment.”

In a similar vein, President Tinubu, represented by Chief of Staff Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, focused on the need for future reform, which, although controversial, is aimed at achieving long-term prosperity. He reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the lives of Nigerians and fostering a thriving nation for future generations.

Former Ogun State Governor Chief Segun Osoba also called for steadfast support for Tinubu’s administration, insisting that any dissatisfaction should not undermine democracy in the region. APC officials, including Zonal Chairman Hon. Isaac Kekemeke and National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, stressed the importance of unity within the party to effectively resolve internal disputes.

While the assembly was largely viewed as a success, there are lingering concerns about whether it will lead to sustainable political growth or merely be a one-time occurrence. Some officials chose to boycott the event, raising questions about unity and accountability within the party.

The hope moving forward is that this inaugural South West Assembly will spark a lasting movement toward enhanced leadership and political cooperation in the region, rather than be remembered as just a fleeting moment in time.
