Rick Gritter honour for Shed Seven frontman

In an exclusive interview, Rick Witter, the lead singer of Shed Seven, shared his excitement about the possibility of a gritter named after him cruising the streets of York this winter. Fresh off the band’s impressive feat of releasing their second number-one album this year, Witter described the idea as a “dream come true.”

The City of York Council has embraced this heartfelt tribute. Deputy leader Pete Kilbane told the BBC, “We have the chance to name one of our new gritters after Rick to celebrate the band’s remarkable success on the charts.” Witter was clearly delighted with the news, calling it “absolutely amazing” and expressing his gratitude to the councilor, saying, “Life made.”

Kilbane went on to explain, “We’ve acquired a couple of new gritters this year, so if Rick is still keen on this, it’s the perfect opportunity to make that lifelong dream a reality. We could see ‘Rick Gritter’ making its way through York this winter.”

The council has even created a mockup of what the gritter might look like, featuring “Rick Gritter” across the front. Kilbane humorously suggested that they also have a smaller gritter designed for spreading liquid on cycle paths, which he proposed could be named “Liquid Gold” after the band’s latest album. “At some point, we could end up with a full Shed Seven fleet,” he joked.

This year is a significant milestone for the Britpop band as they celebrate their 30th anniversary, highlighted by two sell-out shows in York’s Museum Gardens. The band’s first chart-topper, “A Matter of Time,” was released in January, followed by “Liquid Gold.” With this incredible achievement, Shed Seven joins an elite group of artists, including The Beatles, Sir Elton John, Queen, and Taylor Swift, who have also secured two number-one albums in a single year.

Witter reflected on their chart success, calling it “madness” and adding, “I think it’s going to take a little bit of time to compute.”
