LIV golfers cleared for US Ryder Cup team and US PGA Championship

In a major shift for the world of professional golf, the LIV Golf players will now have the chance to compete in both the PGA Championship and represent the United States in the Ryder Cup, as confirmed by the PGA of America on Thursday.

In a statement shared on social media, the PGA of America expressed, “We want to ensure that the PGA Championship continues to feature the strongest field in golf and that the U.S. Ryder Cup team has access to the finest American talent. As such, the board has determined that LIV Golf players will be eligible for both events moving forward.”

The announcement clarified that all LIV Golf players are welcome to participate in the PGA Championship, and any American golfer who qualifies through points or is selected as a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup will also be eligible to compete. This ruling is consistent with the past two years, during which LIV Golf participants were already allowed to play in the PGA Championship.

Brooks Koepka, who was part of the 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup team, enjoyed a grace period that allowed him to keep his PGA of America membership even after joining LIV. Additionally, Bryson DeChambeau, the recent champion of the 2024 U.S. Open, currently ranks third on the points list for the 2025 Ryder Cup, putting him in a favorable position for automatic qualification.

The upcoming PGA Championship is scheduled for May 15 to 18 at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Looking ahead, the United States will host the 2025 Ryder Cup at the Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, New York, next September. It’s worth noting that LIV Golf members from Europe need to compete in four DP World Tour events in a single season to qualify for their own Ryder Cup team.
