Seventeen years after “landing”, Taiwanese compatriot Hu Peiyu’s love affair with “medicine” and “mainland China”

Hefei, October 7 (China News Service) – Interview: A Taiwanese Expat’s 17-Year Journey in Medicine

In an exclusive interview, Taiwanese expat Hu Peiyu shared her colorful journey over the past seventeen years since relocating to the mainland. With a warm smile, she remarked, “As the holiday comes to an end, whether or not you have teeth, just keep smiling.” Her blend of humor and positivity creates an enduring first impression.

Originally from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Hu began her career as a nurse in a cosmetic surgery hospital before taking a leap of faith to the mainland in 2007. Today, she holds the position of head of a dental hospital in Hefei, Anhui Province.

To navigate the unfamiliar medical landscape effectively, Hu invested significant time in promoting cross-strait medical exchanges, bringing Taiwan’s healthcare management principles and top talent to the mainland.

Looking back on her initial move, Hu recalled, “In 2007, a unique opportunity led me across the strait to work in hospital management. The mainland’s healthcare industry was just starting to undergo reform, and a number of visionary private medical entrepreneurs were eager to invest in attracting skilled management talent to revitalize the healthcare system.”

“Once I arrived, I was fortunate to become the manager of a dermatology hospital in Beijing. My boss recognized the value of my experience in Taiwan and entrusted me with crucial responsibilities, including fostering medical exchanges between the two regions,” she added, explaining how she led several management teams to Taiwan for both short visits and extended training.

In 2011, Hu established a dermatology hospital in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. By 2015, she relocated to Shenzhen, where the private medical sector had matured, focusing more on revitalizing private hospitals through reform. For Hu, innovation opened the door to new opportunities.

“Innovation is vital for survival,” she explained, detailing her four-phase journey in medical management since 2007: establishing a foundation, garnering support, transforming the market, and giving back to the community. “I strive to excel in medical management by providing quality services, humanistic care, and personalized attention—this is the heart of healthcare.”

In 2019, after achieving her career goals, Hu redirected her focus to cities like Hefei to engage in more impactful projects. “After thirteen years of managing dermatology, obstetrics, and general hospitals, I observed a new trend in the mainland’s healthcare market—oral healthcare—and decided to settle in Anhui.”

Throughout the interview, Hu, as the director, warmly greeted patients and engaged in friendly conversations. She firmly believes that healthcare institutions should prioritize humanistic care while maintaining efficiency.

Over the past two decades, the mainland’s healthcare sector has flourished, marked by rapid hospital construction and increasingly sophisticated equipment. “In the ten-plus years I’ve lived here, relentless change has shaped not only my life but also that of my family and friends back in Taiwan. The pace of development on the mainland presents hope and endless possibilities,” Hu reflected. Looking back on the concerns of those who worried about her moving to the mainland alone seventeen years ago, she noted, “Now, they are filled with envy. I hope to integrate more resources in the future and make an even greater contribution to the medical field across the strait.”
