Napa’s new Costco may just have the best wine section in the entire country, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Opened on October 18, this new location is being celebrated for its impressive selection, largely thanks to Selman Medina, a legendary figure in the Bay Area’s Costco world.
For 11 years, Medina commuted from Napa to work in the wine section of the Novato Costco, which many believe has the finest wine selection among all California Costcos. As one of only 30 “wine stewards” employed by Costco nationwide, he is also a co-founder of two wine steward programs.
When Medina learned that a Costco was opening in his hometown after 35 years, he immediately applied for a transfer. Knowledgeable, charismatic, and friendly, he is likely to attract many members from Novato to Napa.
In many ways, Medina’s role mirrors that of a sommelier. He engages with customers to recommend wines he believes they will enjoy, and it’s clear he embodies the ideal Costco experience because he is, himself, a devoted Costco shopper. “What I love about wine is its connectivity. Wine is a blessing, a reward,” he shares.
For many customers, Medina has become their go-to wine expert, not just at Costco, but beyond. “He’s a celebrity at Costco. He could have his own YouTube channel,” says David Wise, a long-time customer from Novato. “He always tells the truth, and he buys the wines himself.”
One of Medina’s recent picks was a wine called “Son of a Butcher,” crafted by French winemaker Yannick Rousseau in Napa. This Tannat-based blend is often overlooked, but Medina was excited about its potential. He passionately introduced it to customers, and within three days, it sold out a whole pallet.
We asked Medina to recommend three outstanding wines currently available at the new Napa Costco. Here’s what he suggested:
1. **Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Gnarly Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley** – $58.99 (regular price $100): “This vineyard is fantastic for making Zinfandel,” Medina notes.
2. **Baker & Hamilton Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville** – $65.99 (regular price $125-$150): Coming from one of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards, Medina considers this the best value in the Napa Costco wine section.
3. **Viñedos del Contino, Contino Blanco, Rioja** – $39.99 (hard to find elsewhere): Referring to this Viura and Grenache Blanc blend, Medina says, “This is a very unique blend, barrel-fermented with a long finish.”
With selections like these, it’s easy to see why wine lovers are flocking to Napa Costco.
