Recently, Soliant Health released a report titled “America’s Germ Capitals: The Cities Where You’re Most Likely to Get Sick.” The report ranks cities based on several criteria, including air pollution, cold incidence rates, asthma prevalence, bacterial levels in public transportation, and allergy rates, all weighted equally for a total score out of 100.
Among the top ten cities, California has a significant presence with four cities making the list. Bakersfield ranks first with an unwellness index of 59.10, followed by Fresno at 57.89, and San Diego at 57.64. Sacramento holds the tenth spot with a score of 51.58.
Other notable mentions include New York City, Jackson in Mississippi, New Orleans, Memphis, Augusta in Georgia, and Baltimore.
Some readers might wonder why Los Angeles and San Francisco didn’t make the cut. In fact, the Los Angeles metropolitan area came in just shy of the top ten with a score of 51.08, landing at eleventh place, while San Francisco scored 47.35, placing it at twenty-first.
Additional California metros include Stockton at thirteenth, Riverside at seventeenth, and San Jose at sixty-ninth.
Soliant Health highlights that poor air quality and high asthma rates are the key factors contributing to Bakersfield’s top ranking, as these elements also raise the likelihood of catching colds.
In stark contrast, Honolulu appears at the bottom of the list with an impressive score of 12.29, ranking one hundredth among the top metropolitan areas. Soliant Health notes that a clean environment combined with robust healthcare services significantly decreases residents’ chances of falling ill.
