On the evening of October 13, the documentary “Zhao Wou-Ki: The Art Realm Trilogy” had its Paris premiere at the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris.
Attending the event were over 150 distinguished guests, including Chen Dong, the Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in France and his wife, Zhao Cheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee and Minister of Propaganda, as well as Ai Kwun-Shem and his wife, the Chairman of the Cai Kwun-Shem Foundation in Hong Kong. Other notable attendees included Liu Hongge, the Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris, Orge, the Mayor of Deauville, and Messadi, the Special Representative for Diplomatic Relations in the Paris region.
In his speech, Chen Dong recognized Zhao Wou-Ki as an outstanding French Chinese artist and a fine representative of the blend of Chinese and French cultures. He emphasized that the premiere was held in celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, as well as the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism. Chen remarked on the importance of fostering cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between China and France and stressed that both nations have compelling reasons to embrace openness and inclusivity, especially in today’s context.
Guests took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the documentary’s premiere and watched the segment focused on Hangzhou. The documentary chronicles Zhao Wou-Ki’s journey in art and life, divided into three chapters: Hangzhou, Hong Kong, and France, with each chapter running 52 minutes.
Zhao Wou-Ki was born in Beijing and graduated from the Hangzhou Art Institute (now known as China Academy of Art) before moving to France in 1948 to further his studies. He later settled in France and is celebrated as a representative of Western modern lyrical abstraction.
