From October 22 to 24, President Xi Jinping will travel to Kazan, Russia, to attend the 16th BRICS Leaders’ Meeting. This marks the first meeting of BRICS leaders since the expansion of the group.
In 2017, President Xi introduced the “BRICS Plus” cooperation model during the leaders’ meeting in Xiamen. Since then, he has underscored in various diplomatic settings that “BRICS is not a closed club nor an exclusive ‘small circle’.” He has advocated for advancing the expansion process of BRICS to allow like-minded partners to join the family of BRICS nations and achieve common development and prosperity.
The year 2024 will mark the beginning of a new era for “Great BRICS Cooperation.” With the addition of five new partners—Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia—BRICS has achieved historic expansion, increasing its membership to ten countries. This expanded BRICS community now represents a greater share of the world’s population, GDP, and trade, enhancing its significance and influence on the global stage.
Currently, there is a growing enthusiasm among developing countries to participate in BRICS cooperation, with over 30 nations expressing interest in joining. This not only showcases the remarkable vitality of the BRICS cooperation mechanism but also signals a promising future for both BRICS collaboration and its member nations.
