On October 22, reports from the BBC indicate that the Central Election Commission of Moldova has announced the results of a nationwide referendum held on October 20. The results show that a narrow majority of voters, 50.46%, supported a constitutional amendment to establish joining the European Union as Moldova’s strategic goal.
During a press conference, Angelica Caraman, the chair of the Central Election Commission, stated that they will be submitting a report on the voting results to the Constitutional Court, which is expected to confirm or overturn the referendum results within ten days.
Coinciding with the EU accession referendum, Moldova also held a presidential election. However, since no candidate received more than 50% of the votes, the Central Election Commission has scheduled a second round of presidential elections for November 3.
Local media reports highlight that since Maia Sandu took office as President of Moldova at the end of 2020, the country has accelerated its efforts to join the EU. In March 2022, Moldova submitted its application for EU membership and was granted candidate status in June of that year. The EU and Moldova are set to begin accession negotiations in June 2024.
