Datian, Fujian holds a series of activities -the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Tan Kah Kee-

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview local officials and participants about the series of events held in Datian County, Sanming City, Fujian Province, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Chen Jiageng. The events took place from October 22 to 23, under the theme “The Banner of Overseas Chinese, the Brilliance of the Nation.”

When asked about the significance of the series, one organizer explained that these activities included integrated moral education lessons for students at various educational levels, an art exhibition, a re-tracing of the historical paths walked by Chen Jiageng, visits to various museums, a documentary premiere titled “Fires of War and Song,” and a cultural evening performance. These various activities aimed to recount Datian’s rich educational history during the tumult of war and to celebrate the patriotic spirit and noble character of Chen Jiageng.

The “Second Jimei Aesthetic Village” is situated in Yutian Village, Junxi Town within Datian. Its history dates back to the wartime relocation of several Jimei institutions, such as the Jimei Advanced Agricultural and Forestry School, the Jimei Advanced Business School, and the Jimei Maritime School. These institutions collectively formed a significant educational hub during a time of crisis, known historically for their resilience and dedication to education amidst the challenges of war.

One participant shared a powerful story: after the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937, coastal cities in China fell one by one. Chen Jiageng’s schools gradually relocated inland, with three vocational schools moving to Datian by November 1938. Notably, locals contributed by providing space in religious halls and homes for the schools after their initial facilities were bombed.

Through the support of the Datian community, Jimei students and faculty not only continued their education but also contributed to the war effort. Their journey back to Jimei after the war in 1946 represented a remarkable story of perseverance against numerous challenges, creating a legacy in both wartime education and maritime training.

The series of events was coordinated under the guidance of various local governmental and educational organizations, showcasing the collaborative effort to honor Chen Jiageng’s legacy.

In conclusion, attendees remarked that this tribute was not only a celebration of Chen Jiageng’s extraordinary life but also a vital step toward preserving and promoting the values he embodied. This initiative aims to further enhance the cultural richness of Datian County while keeping the spirit of Chen Jiageng alive for future generations.
